Formally, this movie is viewed as a screen adaption of Stephen King's novel by the same name, written under the pen name of Richard Bachman, a story of future America where totalism and poverty are two sides of the same coin, the stratification of classes has grown exponentially, and the rich take fun from violent tv-shows like 'The Running Man' where the slum dwellers are cruelly molested and killed. However, the movie has deviated from the original idea so much that it is actually closer to a remake of Yves Boisset's 1983 movie The Price of Danger that, in turn, was founded upon the plot of Robert Shackley's story. In fact, Shackley even tried to sue the creators of The Running Man! So instead of King-Bachman's cyberpunk thriller you can lawfully expect to see a bold, somewhat kitsch, expressive action movie where the main character is an officer who refused to shoot the hungry mob... and became a participant of 'The Running Man' game instead of spending a lifetime behind the bars. Time for a spiteful, beamish host, grotesque dances, and absolutely portentous killers! The core of the plot is incredibly simple: the protagonist just has to run, and run fast. Occasionally, however, he gets caught, and then we get inventive trashy fights with some flashy agonists: the fat Dinamo adorned with lightbulbs, mad hockey player, a guy with a saw etcetera. Pretty much like wrestling and the host's voice magnify the show participation effect.
